The following post continues the Mobile Monday Series reviewing various apps for mobile devices that help doing genealogy while you are on the go. If you haven't been following this series be sure to check previous posts:

If you have not been listening to the Genealogy Gems Podcast yet you have been missing out on a great genealogy resource that is informative and entertaining. Lisa Louise Cooke has been doing the Genealogy Gems Podcast ever since March 2007. At the very beginning Lisa wondered whether anyone was even listening to her and now she is known by genealogists around the world.

There are a number of ways to listen to the Genealogy Gems Podcast including streaming it directly from the website, downloading it from the website and played in your media player on your computer or mp3 player, subscribe through iTunes, and now you can stream the podcast directly from your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Having this app is so useful to me because there are many times when I am at work and I get bored with music and I want to listen to one of the new episodes of the podcast but I can't simply download and sync it while I am at work so being able to go into the app and play the episodes make it very convenient and easy.

The picture above is known to many genealogists! Even if the title Genealogy Gems Podcast was not shown above, I would automatically know that it has something to do with the podcast because it has become the podcast and website logo.
Episode Player and Show Notes
When the podcast loads, which by the way is SO much faster after this last upgrade, it takes you to the most recent episode and is ready to play. It tells you what episode number it is along with the date the episode was published. Below the play button is that episodes Show Notes. The Show Notes are a brief summary of what that episode contains and what "Genealogy Gem" is in that episode. To view all the show notes simply swipe your finger like and other app or website on an iPhone or iPod Touch.

You can also listen to all previous episodes of the podcast by clicking on the Episodes button in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. I really like this feature because many times Lisa refers to previous episodes in more recent podcasts and it is nice to be able to scroll back a year or two and listen to that episode as well without having to download it again to my iPhone.
Episode List
By clicking on the Contact tab at the bottom of the screen you are able to contact Lisa by a number of different ways. She loves hearing from her listeners whether they have a questions, comment, or just want to say hi. You can even call the voicemail line ( (925) 272-4021 ) and leave her a message. Your message may even show up on a future podcast! On this tab you can also email Lisa, go to her Twitter and Facebook pages, visit the website (, and troubleshoot the app if something seems not be working like it should.

The last tab on the botton of the screen says Starred. On the Episodes tab and screens you can star a specific episode if something stands out or to remind you to come back to that episode to a link mentioned in the show. This Starred screen will show all episodes you have starred and marked as special.
Starred Episodes
Back on the Episodes screens there is a little button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen that says Extras. This page gives all sorts of extras for you to view and download. You can download wallpapers that are episode related, view any bonus content, play the podcast in the background so you can do other things on your iPhone, get links that were mentioned in the episode, and share the episode with a friend.

You can also view the Show extras which let you view the podcast in iTunes, visit the website, and share the podcast with a friend.

This app and podcast is so great. Lisa has really helped get the word out there on how do find records, what sites are available, and given us the opportunity to learn more about genealogists out there with all the interviews she conducts. If you have not been following her podcast you definitely have been missing out! To learn more about her and the Genealogy Gems Podcast, visit the Genealogy Gems website. Lisa also hosts the Family Tree Magazine and Family History: Genealogy Made Easy Podcasts.
